Missouri Center for the Book Ozarks Chapter, (MCBOC), Call for Submissions: Word and Image
Call for Submissions
Word and Image: Prompts for Composing
The Ozarks Chapter of the Missouri Center for the Book (MCB), in conjunction with Moon City Press, is calling for submissions of both writing and illustrations for an MCB-sponsored and NEA-funded book project, to be published by fall 2014 or spring 2015. Cash prizes ($50 first prize, $25 runner-up) will be awarded to “best word” and “best image” submissions in two age groups, under-18 and adult. The under-18 winners will be required to provide proof of age.
The book will be a compilation of texts and images, each accompanied by prompts. It is intended to serve as a catalyst for writers and illustrators of any age. Its high-interest prompts will encourage readers to draw, reflect, imagine, describe, explain, argue, persuade, analyze, and narrate in response to the art and writing contained within the book’s pages.
No particular theme or subject is required for submissions, though images/texts on “place” (whether personal or public, town or country), “from past to present,” and “occasions and memories” are especially welcome.
Please keep in mind that the book is intended for classroom use on the secondary level. Make it exciting, make it fresh, make it new, but avoid subject material or language that may not fit this target audience.
Submit entries January 6, 2014 - May 16, 2014 at https://mooncitypress.submittable.com/. Those who have not previously submitted work to a press or journal using Submittable will be prompted to register. Please do so. Registration is free and is for all of Submittable, which is a submissions manager used by hundreds of literary journals and presses. Accepts/declines notification will be sent by July 1, 2014. Prizes will also be announced at this time on the Moon City Press website at http://mooncitypress.com/.
Cover letter should include genre or genres submitted and whether you are submitting as under-18 or adult.
Have titles for your submissions.
Written work may be from any genre (fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, cross-genre), but no more than 400 words.
Text files should be .doc, .docx, or .rtf.
No previously published work, please, in any genre.
Images must be greyscale/black and white. Photographs may be submitted, though editors reserve the right to photoshop/alter photos in ways that resemble drawn illustrations.
Submit images as a jpg. We will ask for a 300+ dpi tiff format if accepted.
Artists/illustrators may also include accompanying writing prompts, questions, or statements that could be printed with their images. These prompts may be included with the image or in the cover letter.
